The Field Manual

Frequently Asked Questions

How does it know my neighbourhood?

We combine modern AI with geographical mapping data to understand the world exactly where you are standing. The system looks at the map context to see if you are by the coast, in a dense city, or near a mountain range. It picks landmarks that are common to those areas. It won't know your specific front gate, but it will know to look for a Suburban Sentinel (that blue post-box) or an Ancient Sleeping Giant (a large tree). As the assistant navigator, it's your job to guide them toward the landmarks to be discovered.

Do I have to look at my phone while we walk?

We hope you don't. We built Wonder Trails to help kids look up, not down at glowing rectangles. The maps are generated in a high-resolution 3:2 ratio, which is designed to be printed. Handing your child a physical piece of paper makes the mission feel official. It turns them from a passenger into the leader of the expedition.

How quickly can we start the mission?

Seconds. Once you hit the generate button, our engine room creates the story and paints the map in our signature artistic style. It will be ready for almost immediate download on the confirmation page, and we will send a handy link to your inbox as a backup.

What if the 'Big Boat' on the map doesn't look like the boat we found?

This is where the magic happens. We've realised that as adults, we lose the ability to see the magic in the mundane. To a four-year-old, if the map says there is a boat, and they find a boat, it's the right one. If they are skeptical, do what we do, take a photo for a second opinion and keep the mission moving. If you share those photos with friends, make sure you tag us so other families can get out and explore too!

Can we use this anywhere in the world?

Absolutely. Whether you are in a small country town, a crowded city harbour, or even on a road trip, the map will adapt. However, the more detail you share about your starting point, the more specific our maps can get. Please consider including detail like the suburb, town, state, and country so we don't confuse Melbourne, Victoria with Melbourne, Florida. Trust us, that's a thing.

Is it safe to use?

We are parents too, so we take this seriously. We don't ask for your exact house number or your child's last name. We only need a starting point and a first name or even nickname to make the magic feel personal. We don't track your movement or store your location history. We also take precautions to limit non-child-friendly items from making their way onto the artistic maps. We even wipe the maps from our server after 7 days in line with our privacy policy.

What should I use for the Grand Reward?

Anything that makes the X on the map feel earned. It could be an ice cream, a trip to the local park, or even a hug from Grand-pop at the end of a long drive. The reward isn't the point: the mission is.
